If you love what you are doing you will be successful.” Albert SchweitzerAlbert Schweitzer received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of “Reverence for Life”, expressed in many ways, but most famously in founding and sustaining the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene, now in Gabon, west central Africa (then French Equatorial Africa). If you are not familiar with him you should take the time to read about his amazing life. He was a German and then French theologian, organist, philosopher, physician, and medical missionary. If anyone could speak on success it would be Albert Schweitzer.His statement seems to be a contradiction. Don’t we strive to be successful to be happy? The very thought of success brings happiness to mind for when you are successful then you have reached a goal and the celebration starts. Yet, this statement has a point that is so valid.If you enjoy the process of success, that means the struggles of everyday performing the tasks to attain your goal, then that goal will be achieved. I live in the southwestern part of New Mexico just a few miles south of Interstate 10 which is a major route from California to the east. From my dining room window I can gaze at the traffic that flows across the Chihuahua Desert into El Paso, Texas, and beyond. I’ve talked to people who identify where I live by saying, “Oh, I know where that is, I’ve been through there many times. It’s the most boring drive I’ve ever had.” I will agree that there are no amusement theme parks or enormous casinos (yet) to attract people to make this their destination. But there is so much beauty and awesome nature scenes around the Florida Mountains just eight miles from my backyard as well as the Organ Mountains to the east. The people who pass through here are so focused on their destination that they fail to enjoy the journey through some of the most beautiful desert this country offers.If you are happy in the journey toward success then the goal of success will be much more enjoyable. In fact, you could say with certainty that you have been successful all the way to success. What seems mundane and trivial, difficult and repulsive, lacking in excitement can actually be the inspiration of another adventure. Happiness should not be the end result of success but throughout the process of success.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “If you do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life”. Well, its not just a slogan! It’s true.

A while ago, we talked about the importance of doing something for a living that inspired so much passion in you that you often found yourself completely engrossed. Well, that inspiration typically comes from the sheer happiness and bliss that you get whenever you are doing what you love.

Growing up, very few of us are ever encouraged to pursue a career based on what WE love and are inspired by. In fact, 99% of the time we are encouraged to choose a profession based on what the grown ups around us approve of, which is usually fueled by their own regrets and pain around what they never accomplished.

Understand that as a 20, 30, 40, 50, or even 60 something adult that you now must see all of that negative programming as just that, and become hell bent on living your life by your design; and a big part of that is simply waking up every day and doing work that makes you happy.

The sad is part is that intuitively we all know this, but few people actually feel like they deserve it. This is no accident. Society teaches us to think “who do you think YOU are to feel that you deserve to love what you do? Just do something that pays the bills and follow the rules”.

A secret that many successful people know is that they are where they are by first identifying what made them happy and then pursuing it aggressively. Happiness is truly the key to success because it gives you a mental and emotional edge that will help you to work through adversity, outshine your competition, and experience true fulfillment.

Each person makes their own choice as to whether or not they will settle for this reality or create one of their own design. I hope that you will choose the latter and enjoy the fantastic fulfillment and quality of life that comes with it. Doing what makes you happy will ultimately make you incredibly successful as well because you will have the emotional “edge” of having true passion for your work.

Let Us Pass On the Happiness

The bus sped in the night, and the passengers got off to leave from station to station. I suddenly discovered that I actually did not have one point five Yuan coins in the pocket. So I hastened to ask a female passenger beside me: “Excuse me, do you have change for 100 Yuan?” Unfortunately, they are helpless to my plight.

When I sighed heavily, and put 100 bills into the slot, a voice suddenly turned up: “Here is one point five Yuan, give you.” A young lady holding one point five coin gave to me. “No, no! I cannot any reason to accept your money.” I refused politely. “But I do not have so many coins to exchange and you are in urgent of one point five change, isn’t it?” That young lady tried her best to persuade me to accept her help. “You are right, but I still cannot take your money.” I thought for a while and said: “If you and I get off at the same station, I went to a convenience store to get some change to return to you. Or the next time I met you in the bus, and then I returned to you; or else you leave an address to me, I …”

She could not help but interrupted my words: “Do not bother, you just consider it as that I took the one point five Yuan to buy happiness from you. I am very pleased and happy to give you a hand. I think you must also feel that getting help timely from others is a happy thing!” Although I agreed with her, I still shook my head and could not accept her money. So she made a suggestion: “So please help me do a thing to exchange one point five dollars. The next time you encounter the people with the same experience in the bus, you must give him one point five Yuan, so that this happiness can continue to pass along.”

While, I dragged a weary pace to get on the bus, but when I got off, my mind was nice and warm. Later, I always put one point five Yuan in the pocket, in order to continue to spread happiness. Happiness lies in our helpful heart, and happiness is all around. So, let us pass along it permanently.

Happiness – 6 Simple Steps to create Happiness

Pursuit Happiness is a process and may not be as easy as ABCs, but it can to as simple as just following 6 simple steps.

Step One

Firstly, determine your priority in life. If you want to be happy, happiness should be the ultimate goal in your life. Always bear in mind that you truly want to be happy. Also, figure out what is important to you in life. It may be your family, friends, careers or even achieving your childhood dream.

Step Two

Think about stuffs that make you happy. Focus on things that make you feel good and think back to figure out what made you feel happy? Remember the place and time and also the exact good feelings.

Step Three

Be optimistic. Focus on what is positive about your life and everything around you. Stop worrying and do not think about things that went wrong and ask why they happened. Instead, remind yourself it was a good learning lesson and moved forward.

Step Four

Allocate a timeslot to do things that you enjoy. Spend time with what is important in your life. Enjoying your favorite activities let your mind and heart have the time to relax and recover. Make your time worthwhile and you will be happier.

Step Five

Smile to yourself every now and then. Smile to the people around you. Smiling helps to lighten one’s mood and also when you are smiling, it is almost impossible to feel upset or angry. A simple smile can bring you closer to your happiness.

Step Six

Life is not as bad as it seems. Do not take things for granted. Learn to appreciate things that are working out well in your life. Thanks your family, your friends and even yourself for putting in effort in living a happy life.

Happiness is one of those concepts people have always tried to precisely define and, in spite of their efforts and failure to reach to an exact definition, everyone still has at least a vague idea about what happiness means to them. If body and spirit is what we all are, then body and spirit should be those things to which a definition of happiness must refer.

Your Happiness, Your Responsibility

“You are the only one who can make you happy.” We have all heard that so many times in our lives. There are times it is a pretty tough pill to swallow. In reality, the people that surround you have a huge impact on your current mood. When your children are grumpy in the morning, you find a nice pile the dog left you over night, you hit the road and the traffic won’t allow you your normal speed, then when you get to work and your co-worker called in sick… these are all things that might contribute to your overall happiness of the day.

However, moods and temporary emotions are not the same as happiness. Happiness exists when you look at the overall picture of your life and you smile, that is happiness. You know those times when you can’t wait for your children to go to bed, then later you check on the kids and you almost cry because they look exactly like angels… YOUR ANGELS, sleeping so sweetly and soundly. You can hardly remember a time of irritation with them. That is happiness.

As life progresses and changes, we realize that who we are, (what makes us, us)… that is what we are responsible for. We know that immediate gratification or irritation only pacifies or deteriorates our emotional stimuli short term. Our global view of how we see ourselves determines our state of mind. Our state of mind determines our happiness.

So, how do we take control of our emotions and find the path of happiness? This seems to be the million dollar question. There are tons of books on or related to the subject. You could read and practice until you are completely confused. Or, we could spend the rest of our life introspectively evaluating what makes us happy. Which might take more time and energy and actually frustrate us more.

How about this? What if we looked at ourselves and decided what we liked and didn’t like and set about making changes. It doesn’t have to be major alterations. Maybe you are tired of your house but can’t afford to move. Try painting the living room or buying flowers to set on the kitchen table. If you haven’t had a vacation for awhile and just can’t afford to take that cruise, go camping instead.

Maybe the issues are more personal or internal. Do you get mad too easily? Learn Yoga or Meditation. Are you having marital problems? Visit a counselor. Are the kids having discipline issues? Determine the major issues, establish guidelines on how you are going to correct the problem and stick to it.

You may be saying, ‘Sure, that sounds so easy but…’ Of course it sounds easy. Problems are always easier to talk about than to take the obvious actions to fix them. But, for the most part, things are as difficult or as easy as we determine them to be. Sometimes we just make things harder than necessary.

If your unhappiness stems from a situation beyond your control then find other ways to compensate. If, for example, money is so tight and no apparent windfall is coming your way any time soon, find inexpensive entertainment. Backyard ballgames, picnics in the park, movie night with popcorn and snacks in your bedroom are a few alternatives to an expensive night out. If the issues are more serious and you feel powerless, that is the time to seek professional help.

Otherwise, look in the mirror and be glad. If you don’t like what you see, change it. Make the solution that simple!
