The 8 Coaching Tips below are designed to help coaches plan their practices more effectively. These eight tips are very simple and straightforward – yet they can have a tremendous impact on how well a coach plans their practice.

These tips should be followed and implemented by all basketball coaches – regardless of their experience or level of competition. By following these 8 basketball coaching tips, coaches are setting themselves and their players up for success, during practices and games!

1. Coaches should always plan their practices ahead of time. It is best to have a written practice schedule for the entire season. This makes it easier for the coach to establish and stick to their game plan. At the very least, coaches should have their entire week planned out in advance.

2. Coaches should use the drills they are most familiar and comfortable with. They should be able to demonstrate these drills as well.

3. When running drills, players should always go at “game speed”. They should also get as many repetitions as possible on each drill. By doing these two things, players will become more comfortable with the drills and skills being practiced. This translates into being able to perform them instinctively during game situations.

4. Coaches should only add new drills when the players have mastered the old ones. They should keep it simple and focus on the skills being taught. Players don’t need to be overwhelmed with too many drills, this tends to confuse them.

5. Coaches should always teach and stress the importance of teamwork. The players must understand that the team comes before the individual. This is critical to the team’s success! Understanding this one concept alone will help players become more well-rounded at every aspect of their game.

6. Coaches should discuss the team rules, regulations and policies with the players. Players should always know what is expected of them, and also what is unacceptable behavior or conduct. When a coach is upfront about the rules and consequences for breaking them, players are more likely to respect them.

7. Coaches should always be enthusiastic on and off the court. Players usually feed off of their coach’s attitude and personality. If a coach is constantly enthusiastic about the game, this will have a tremendous impact on the players’ attitude and outlook as well.

8. Coaches must always remember that the players they are coaching are far more important than the game they are coaching. Coaches should put the best interest of their players before everything else. They must remember that this is just a game! Make it fun for the kids.

How do you see people

How do you view the potential of people at work? If we think about McGregor’s X and Y theory you might consider yourself to be a Theory X person. That is, that people dislike work and will avoid it wherever possible, and are motivated only by money or fear. Alternatively, you might subscribe to Theory Y which suggests that people work for a range of psychological as well as economic reasons, and are motivated by achievement, responsibility and so on.

It is important to recognise that neither of these views can be proven as right or wrong, they are simply beliefs about human nature based on experience. Our starting point as coaches therefore needs to be which of these views is more useful? Probably Theory Y. It seems to me that a coach is likely to be more helpful if his or her starting point is to believe that the coachee starts with the potential to achieve his or her aims. It is then the job of the coach is to play a part in realising that potential.

Interference

Traditional training and development has proven to be reasonably successful at taking potential and adding to it. Usually this is a question of imbuing the performer with new knowledge or skills. But coaching is more often required when the performance issue is not a lack of knowledge or skill but rather an unwillingness or inability to effectively deploy them. In these circumstances we need to turn our sights to removing the things that get in the way of our performers accessing their potential.

For example, there could be all sorts of external interference.g.

Lack of opportunity Ideas not accepted Blame culture Restrictive policies and procedures

Equally, there might be a number of internal sources of interference, e.g.

Fear of failure Low confidence Low self belief Previous negative experience Negative expectations Negative self talk

Where organisational coaches have the ability to remove external barriers they must do so without hesitation. However, most coaches have far more scope to work on internal barriers which, in any event, are likely to be far more important to address.

P.L.E

With the things that interfere with my potential reduced, I am likely to access far more of my potential and consequently produce high performance, but how can coaches ensure this is sustained?

Motivation theory suggests that high performance is a strong internal driver for most people so shouldn’t it be enough to ask them to simply continue performing well? Unfortunately not. They will get bored and produce new sources of internal interference such as fatigue and lack of concentration.

Motivation theory also suggests that there are a further two strong internal drivers, namely learning and enjoyment. It is clear that if I’m performing well at a task, learning more about it or myself as I undertake it and enjoying the whole experience then I am more likely to sustain my high levels of performance.

Coaches need to help the people they coach find the Performance, Learning and Enjoyment (PLE) factors in their work, e.g.

Performance

Achieving success Doing the job well Pride Sense of self worth

Learning

Satisfying curiosity Improving Gaining insights Developing new skills

Enjoyment

Sense of challenge Team work Fun Social belonging

How then do coaches remove interference and add in learning and enjoyment? They promote Awareness, Responsibility and Trust (ART)

In raising awareness we are seeking to create high quality focus and attention on the matter at hand. As I become more aware of a situation and my feelings for it, I produce more ideas about changes and improvements that I might make. This helps me identify sources of interference as well as being an enjoyable and insightful process.

Coaches also help the people they coach to recognise that they are not victims of circumstance but in fact have a large degree of choice in how they handle situations. In other words, they are responsible. However, before people can move forward they must:

Believe they can Value the outcome Be willing to try

All of which requires interference to be absent and the internal motivators of performance, learning and enjoyment to be present.

Coaches also build trust. They encourage their coachees to

Trust themselves and strengthen self-belief Trust the coach in order to be more honest and thus further raise awareness Trust the coaching process

Coaching

Coaching is the process of raising awareness, generating responsibility and building trust. The skills are asking incisive questions and listening to the response.

Questions need to be asked around a structured framework, such as the Coaching ARROW described in my book, Coaching at Work.

For the purposes of this article the skills we are focused on are those skills that encourage and promote personal safety among our young people.

Over all coaching is a fantastic way for any concerned adult to assist any young person in improving an identified set of skills. These skills can cover a wide range of topics, such as sports, self improvement, study skills, or personal interaction. It involves verbal discussions, physical demonstrations/activities combined in regularly scheduled and impromptu sessions

It is an effective approach for several reasons.

Coaching is focused

It is a personal interaction that is always very focused! When we take the time to coach a young person, for the duration of the session both individuals are focused on the accomplishment of identified skills. Distractions are minimized while the interactions are typically supportive and encouraging.

Coaching promotes higher self esteem

Individual coaching is an example of positive parenting at work. Coaching aims to mentor a young person one-on-one, building up their confidence by developing essential skills during regular practice. It increases their competency in the skills. As the young person becomes more competent, their self esteem increases as they continue to get better at the skills that are being practiced.

Coaching promotes competency

Coaching children in personal safety develops competency through focused, repeated exposure to the skill being addressed. By providing the information in a variety of different ways the youth begins to assimilate the skill into their daily routines. As with any skill, the more it is done, the better we get at it. The same is true with personal safety practices.

Coaching increases self confidence

Confidence is a product of habitual good practice. The regularity of practice and constructive feedback is important in establishing confidence. When we as adults utilize it correctly, young people develop the practice of assessing themselves for their strengths and areas for improvement that they themselves identify. They learn to identify the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they will need to improve their personal safety practices. In the process, they develop confidence in their abilities.

Coaching encourages a higher commitment to personal safety

A coaching parent balances the attainment of immediate targets with the long-term goal of youth safety. By constantly communicating the goal through formal and informal conversations, and regular practice sessions conducted in a supportive environment, the young person is motivated to remain engaged. Setting short-term goals aligned with the long term vision; and presenting the information in an organized, systematic manner can help increase motivation and commitment to integrate the skills into their daily activities. When we present the information in a meaningful and sequential order, young people begin to see personal safety as a part of everything they do!

Coaching produces future coaches

Coaching requires that you are physically, emotionally, and mentally prepared because it involves two levels: physical and mental. A coach must be aware that coaching entails investing time on each individual skill and on the whole fitness and safety concept with their child… Moreover, that the responsibilities are greater since while you are coaching your children, you are also developing future coaches. What we teach our children will be taught to theirs.

One cannot properly train and improve an entire softball team in just one sitting without knowing the names of the players… Trust in coaching softball is a vital value to have because it gives the team a sense of unity and ones which is an essential element in team sports. Dedication too is important because coaching softball takes time and countless hours of training and motivating. That is why as the team’s coach, it is your job to establish trust among team members and be very dedicated in guiding them to the right path of softball playing and winning.

Another fun and useful tip when coaching softball is to be varied…Develop different kinds of drills and practices to avoid team boredom. It also helps improve the total physical fitness of the player because varied drills and practices gives out a total body work out. When coaching softball, conceptualize and utilize different training methods in order to provide the team with a heightened playing experience that will keep them interested and going.
